Final Idea for Website

This is our final chosen design for The Castros' website. It still follows the colour scheme that we wanted and the only  thing we may change is the chosen font shown. Also the headings displayed may not be on the final product.

Ideas For Website Production

We have had several meetings as a group, and have come to the conclusion that after researching websites and websites of different genres, we are following a design held by the Artic Monkeys on their website. This design is clear, and follows codes and conventions of an Indie/Rock website as shown in the analysis.

Our first design featured the colour scheme like we decided from The Castros' cd cover design.

Our next design featured more grids in order to show more of the links on the home page, with a big rectangle in the middle which would display a slideshow of band pictures. But we have not decided fully what design we will have or what we will change.

Codes & Convetntions of a Website

These are the codes and convetions of a regular website:

Some text will be written in a certain way to help translate the written text into actions you may want to achieve, such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word etc.  Each indicated menu or sub-menu button will be separated by a double arrow like this » Therefore, the sequence will be:

                    Menu button » Sub-menu button » Sub-menu button

Website: Codes and Conventions
We can see different codes and conventions of websites easily, below, there is an analysis of  the Arctic Monkeys website:

Layout and Design
The website is very clear and easy to use.It is clear, as it portrays the links easily and in a clear matter. It uses a wide grid system, this enables the website to have space, so as to not seem too clustered and to be clear in presentation. The background colour is a complete contrast to font colour and this makes it stand out and clear to see. It does not follow the usual convention of having a band picture in the middle, but instead has one of their music videos.

The technical codes used
Many sites provide moving image or audio players to view/listen to. There is no music player or moving image on this home page, however there is in fact a method of making the page scroll down, along with the top menu following, so wherever you are in the page, the menu bar is always there for easy access.

Genre codes
Web design uses recognisable codes and conventions from the genres to make sure audiences know the genre that is being used and are familiar with it, therefore having level expectation sof it. In relation to this website, it is mainly simple with one video in the middle, with links above it.

Initial ideas for website - 1

Our theme for the website will be based on the colour scheme of the designed CD cover that the band has come up with. It fits with their song choice, and it suits the codes and conventions of the Indie genre. Keeping the colours light and simple desgns. Below is the CD cover from which we will be taking the colour scheme from.

Digi-Pak Planning

Digi - Pak Plan

We have planned our first two drafts and we are hoping to construct both of them, in order to pick which one will suit our whole presentation best.

This is our Cross DigiPak that we will produce along with another DigiPak.

This is our second idea for a DigiPak. It is a simple 6 panel idea, with just front and back.

Artist Research - Adam Levine

Adam Levine is the lead vocalist of Marron 5, also an indie/pop band, which relates to our genre. We have also taken ideas from Marron 5's music videos and incorporated them into our video.
He has teamed up with various musical acts. In 2005, Levine was featured on the Ying Yang Twins song Live Again. He appeared on Kanye West's single, Heard Em Say.He is also featured in the song. He has offered his vocals on Gym Class Heroes'  song Stereo Hearts.

These are music videos featuring thse two artists, they are also within the same genre as our music video.

Artist Research - Gary Lightbody

Snow Patrol's lead vocalist Gary Lightbody, created Snow Patrol in 1994, then known as Polar Bear.
His career with Snow Patrol started in Scotland.
They then joined Scottish independent label Jeepster in 1997. The band were happy to be associated with an indie label, because it provided them the independence.

History
He has also worked with other Indie/Pop groups like The Reindeer Section, which he himself formed in 2001.

Listen...Tanks! is another group formed by Gary Lightbody and Snow Patrol's producer Jacknife Lee, which is still in action.

Tired Pony, also formed by Gary Lightbody is a country genred music group, which consists of 6 other members, included Jacknife Lee.

Digi-Paks Research

Digi-Paks are a form of CD packaging that allow the artist to show much more information due to the way it is built. It allows more pockets where information can be stored and shown. It can have 4, 6 or 8 panels and it can have great graphic display abilities. Digipacks purpose is to provide information about the album. Digipacks can flip open like a book, again, with many pockets, with the CD in the center, left or right portion. Usually, the portion of the digipack that hold the CD is made of plastic like a traditional jewel case CD - the plastic part is simply attached to the paper background.

Plans for Digi-Pak and website development

We have planned to construct both our Digi-Pak and website over the christmas holidays, with contrustion beginning over the next week  and carrying on throughout christmas in order to be completed by January. Our music video will then be our main focus.

Meetings & Discussions

Over the last week, we have been meeting together as a group, and we have decided that in order to be able to conduct further anaylisis on our song and theme of music video, we need access to the lyrics of the song. We are therefore waiting for these lyrics to be sent to us.

Analysis Of Music Videos

These analysis will be based on Goodwin's Theory of Music Videos, and the Codes & Conventions of an Indie music video.

Indie/Rock Music Videos
Band/artist shown throughout the video
May have special effects
Calm, but changes as beats 'kicks' in
Narrative/ Performance clips the song.
Close ups

Snow Patrol tend to follow the codes and conventions of an Indie Music video quite perfectly.
The music video for their song, "Crack The Shutters" follows the codes and conventions. It is slightly dark, following the codes and conventions of a Rock music video aswell.  It  has close up and extreme close ups of the artist to begin with, and this follows the rules of an Indie music video. Again, it is dark all around the artist's face. As the music video progresses it pans out, to a close up of the artist's face, while the beat is building up. The beat soon kicks in and the music video changes and adapts to this beat and we see band performance clips and hand held camera shots, which again follow Indie music video codes and conventions. It features different shots of the bandmates and some of the shots feature links with the beat. When the song decreases in speed of beat, the video turns once again to a calm state, only to change when the beat kicks in again. Overall the music video features a dark atmosphere, dark colours, performance clips, along with a small bit of a narrative side to it.

Codes & Conventions Of a Music Video

These are the codes and conventions of the 3 types of music videos that we have as ideas.
Rock Music Videos
Dark/Deep Colours
Performance clips
May have no narrative clips
Unstabilized camera usage
No special effects
Hand held shots

These conventions usually suit Rock music videos, as deep/
dark colours follow the lyrics and type of music. Performance
clips dominate the music video music. Unstabilized camera
shots may feel like the audience is involved, along with
hand held shots hand held footage.

Pop Music Videos
Colourful
Close up of artist
Light hearted and easy-going
Teenager audience & scenarios
May have dance routine
Good mood

The fact that Pop music videos are colourful, light hearted and easy going show that Pop music videos are mainly linked to a younger teenage audience. They can be narrative or  performance based videos, and usually focus on good things.

Indie/Rock Music Videos
Band/artist shown throughout the video
May have special effects
Calm, but changes as beats 'kicks' in
Narrative/ Performance clips
Close ups

Indie videos have enticed our group, and this is our main
idea. They may have black & white scenes, and may be
mostly narrative, basing the music video on the lyrics of the song.

Looking into Websites 2

http://arcticmonkeys.com/
The Artic Monkeys website relates to codes and conventions of an Indie music video, (shown in later notes) in which it is clear, simple and very light, not a lot of dark colours are used but more clear, and lighter tones.

Codes & Conventions of a Music Video

ff

First Look Into Websites

These websites are a first look at artists' sites that have a music genre linked to ours, they are Indie & Rock bands and they relate to codes and conventions of their own genre, ie; Fall Out boy is a rock band, which is slightly more Indie than rock, their website is light, and clear, whereas Aerosmith, is a rock band, this is also portrayed through their website, dark colours and although the outside is clear, the center of the website is quite cluttered and full of information.

Similar Products

These music tracks are similar to the one we've picked, the instruments used and the tune set are alike. These may give us ideas for our music video as they are very much alike.

Similar Products - Performance Dominated Videos

These are all examples of music videos which mostly consist of performace clips in a montage into a music video, there may also be a storyline or narrative part of these music videos, but as the title states, they are mostly performance dominated. Performance dominated music videos, display the artist(s) as the perform, this may be live, or scripted on a stage, either way it shows them as they perform.

Initial Ideas

Promotional Video Investigation

Below are some promo videos which are focused on different genres to show the difference between them. Promotional videos are used to promote or show an artist to an audience. They can be used as a marketing device in order to sell the artists music.
This video focuses on a Dance/Club track relase and is focused on this genre.

This promo video uses past clips from shows in order to promote the artist.

A2 Media Studies - The Group

The people involved in my group for A2 Media Studies this year will be Zygimantas Pukas, Luke Sheridan and myself. This year we are going to do a music video, a website and design a Digi-Pak.
